Time Jumping

I realize my last post was over a year ago! The bad news is I’m not the best poster. The good news is I’ve been busier than ever this year. Between music gigs, magic gigs, and working a full time job with a two hour commute, it can be difficult to pay attention to every tiny detail.

I guess the biggest news is that I’m wrapping up completion on my second album. This album was self-funded over the summer and I’m really pleased with the outcome. An album may seem simple but I’m telling you-it requires discipline and a ton of hard work! Thankfully, the folks I recorded with had amazing patience and attention to detail.

This year I look forward to taking chances, learning from mistakes, and entertaining to the best of my ability. Stay tuned my friends…..

Happy New Year!

I hope everyone is having a great year so far. We all try to make changes and better ourselves each year- or at least saying we’re going to go to the gym sounds good to our ears while we eat our Christmas dinner! If they could just start building Wal-Mart’s on top of American Family everything would be so easy…..

But seriously, I can’t think of many rewarding things that are easy. 2013 taught me that lesson over and over. I wanted to put out an album and I recorded it in my home studio over a two week period. When I listened back, the recording enthralled me at first. After multiple listens  I noticed minor flaws. In the end I scrapped the entire album.

Why? Because I knew my intentions were great but my attention to detail was lacking- a hard pill to swallow. Remember that when we set our minds on something there are many sub-plots and diversions that will present themselves along the way. If there aren’t any parking spots at the gym we might have to actually wait for something.

As an independent artist I’ve found that I tend to wait for everything- posters, CDs , phone calls, carrot-danglers, etc. My goal for 2014 is to apply more attention to detail to all facets of my life while I’m waiting. Remember that when the song ends, someone will feel something new while another will check their phone-try not to do that. Let’s all enjoy the journey along the way.

I have long tinkered with the idea of combining magic and music. Lately, my shows have allowed me to visit with tables and have some fun. Along with restaurant magic I’ve dusted off the old kid show and revamped everything. I’ve noticed that magic warms up a room quickly and suspends time if the given circumstances allow for this to happen(no babies in hysterics).
I guess what it all boils down to is a powerful dose of music followed by an impossible possibility is where I want to go. Or near there….hopefully.

Enjoy the video and please SHARE.

New Album

I realized I haven’t written anything in a while. I have a lot to write about! I am currently vacationing in Michigan and loving the break from the Richmond humidity-my guitar not so much! She’s having a lot of trouble staying in tune due to the temperature changes.
Anyway, before I left for vacation, I wrote and recorded my second album. This go around I have decided to record and fund the album myself. From mastering the album to the artwork for the cover, I want this album to intrigue, surprise, and most importantly connect with each and every listener.
The album includes solo guitar pieces as well as tunes I played vocals, drums, bass, keys, matchbooks, pipes, shakers, brooms, dogs barking in background, etc. I intentionally left for vacation as soon as I finished. I look forward to returning home, adding the bells and whistles to a few tracks, and getting all the levels on the tunes even.
I cannot wait to share this music with you!

Stay Tuned,

Fingerstyle in France

I was recently contacted by a radio station in France. They are called La Note Picking Radio and they stream fingerstyle guitar music 24/7! I quickly grabbed a cd and a couple of radio promotional recordings and sent them in the mail. I have never had one of my songs on the radio, but thanks to this awesome station there is hope for the fingerstyle guitar community! Check them out:

National Gig

I am excited to announce that I’ll be playing The National in Richmond Va. on Friday dec. 14th. I will be opening up for the band Three Sheets To The Wind. They are an awesome band that cover the hits from the 70′s and 80′s. Ive always wondered what it would be like to play my acoustic through the National’s sound system. Thanks to Three Sheets, I’ll soon find out!

Home of the Legends

I just returned from the Home of the Legends Thumbpicking Contest in Kentucky. After twenty-two hours round trip and four hours competing, I’m home and already thinking about next year!
The amount of talent in the green room was astounding and the players were a lot of fun to hang out with. I didn’t place this time, but I felt like I played really well. It’s easy to take things personally when the judges don’t dig your style (this has happened once or twice), but all you can do is keep playing. I tell my students that sometimes losing teaches you more than winning.
Finally, I want to give a huge shout out to Scott Taylor-the winner! Scott is one of the best guitarists I have met and just as nice of a guy. Scott and his wife are fixtures in the fingerstyle scene and that awesome prize, a Gretsch Country Gentleman, couldn’t have gone to a better picker-Congratulations!
